ZONACAMMARATA

…Look I’m Cammarata Giovanni the artist from Maregrosso[…]what they’re doing in Messina is INCREDIBILE…

A great artist, visionary and dreamer who has shown how a squalid, run down area can become an open air contemporary art museum. These photos were taken in front of what remains of the sculptures from the Puparo’s House, all the rest has been swallowed by the bulldozers that years ago tore down the masterpieces by Giovanni Cammarata(1914-2002), the “builder from Messina” with Gaudì’s genes. The essay ZONACAMMARATA by the local sociologist Pier Paolo Zampieri, is about a work of art which << forces itself upon the city like a local howl: and so it still demands an answer>>

[…] That sea, a favourite for country walks where the poet said << if you plunge your hand in it drips blue drops>>, a sea popular until the beginning of the 70’s is now forgotten by city life and has become invisible. Right next to that huge railway, next to all the industrial waste left by a great dream of modernity gone bad, the story of Cammarata unfolds… After the great Renaissance architectural interpretation tied to the fantastic four (Montorsoli Del Duca,Ponzello, Juvarra), Aricò interestingly confers the title of <<fifth architect>> to a novelist: Stefano D’Arrigo, who set the Horcynus Orca (1975) in Cariddi fully understanding the extraterrestrial hub of the city. Even if it seems provocative, it won’t be wrong to propose Cammarata as the <<sixth architect>> : the only one to choose to symbolically get involved with the south side of Messina with its powerful rejected sea […] ZONACAMMARATA
